“Bioinformatics and Computational Biology”

Abstract

Bioinformatics and computational biology are interdisciplinary subjects that combine biology, computer science, and mathematics. These fields employ computational tools and techniques to examine, evaluate, and simulate biological data, facilitating a more profound understanding of intricate biological systems. This introduction offers a comprehensive review of bioinformatics and computational biology, emphasizing their importance, fundamental principles, and applications in contemporary biological research (Pevsner, 2015).

The rapid and significant increase in biological data, such as genetic sequences, protein structures, and high-throughput experimental data, has made it necessary to create computer methods to analyze and extract valuable information from these extensive datasets. Bioinformatics and computational biology are essential in unraveling the genetic foundation of diseases, comprehending biological pathways, forecasting protein shapes and activities, and creating innovative therapies. These domains have become essential instruments for biological study, playing a crucial role in the progress of medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental science (Aluru, 2016).

Enhancing Patient Care through the Utilization of Digital Dentistry

Abstract

Traditional dentistry unquestionably offers efficient preventive and therapeutic choices to uphold, enhance, or reinstate the oral health-related quality of life for patients (Alzoubi et al., 2017). Nevertheless, digital dentistry provides supplementary instruments to accomplish this objective. Dentists can enhance the accuracy of their diagnosis, prevention, and therapeutic intervention by utilizing digital technologies. Furthermore, digital workflows have the potential to enhance the convenience of the treatment process for patients. The integration of digital tools and techniques into dental practice has not only revolutionized treatment processes but has also significantly enhanced the overall quality of patient care.

According to Gupta and Mittal (2018), the introduction of digital technology has resulted in various areas experiencing substantial transformations. Dentistry is one of the fields that has been a big player in this path of transformation. A new age in dental treatment has begun and it is defined by increased precision, efficiency, and patient happiness. This new era was brought about by the transition from traditional methods to digital practices.

“Kidney Disease and Diabetic Patients”

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus has become an epidemic on a global scale. One major cause of this is the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM). As of 2021, 537 million individuals, or 11% of the global population, were diabetic. A projected 783 million, or 12% of the total population, will fall into that category by the year 2045. The obesity pandemic, which is driven by increased consumption of processed foods, decreased physical activity, and prolonged sitting, is directly responsible for the increasing number of individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. With the rise of urban centres and advanced technologies, the so-called “Western lifestyle” is associated. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) refers to patients who have diabetes and have chronic renal disease. As a result of diabetes, it is one of the major complications that might develop over time. In the long run, DKD will affect 20–50% of patients with T2DM. Around the world, DKD accounts for half of all cases of chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease. Also, DKD reduces quality of life and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Get up-to-date details on DKD’s prevalence, causes, and diagnostic criteria from this study.

KEYWORDS: chronic kidney disease; diabetes mellitus; epidemiology; end-stage kidney disease.

Knowledge and Attitude of Pharmacists toward Pharmaceutical Care in Saudi Arabia

Abstract

Background: Pharmaceutical care plays a vital role in improving patient outcomes and quality of life. In Saudi Arabia, there has been a recent emphasis on expanding pharmacy education and integrating pharmaceutical care into practice. However, there is a need to assess the knowledge and attitudes of pharmacists towards pharmaceutical care in the country.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge and attitude of pharmacists towards pharmaceutical care in Saudi Arabia through a systematic review of relevant literature.

Methods: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted, searching major databases for studies conducted between 2008-2024 that summarized pharmacists’ knowledge and attitudes towards pharmaceutical care in Saudi Arabia. Data extraction and risk of bias assessment were performed to synthesize the findings.

Results: The included studies indicated a generally positive attitude among pharmacists towards pharmaceutical care in Saudi Arabia. Pharmacists showed good knowledge, attitude, and practice related to pharmaceutical care, with variations based on demographic factors such as gender, years of experience, and practice setting.

Conclusion: The findings suggest that pharmacists in Saudi Arabia are increasingly recognizing the importance of pharmaceutical care in improving patient health outcomes. While there are areas for improvement, such as enhancing knowledge in community pharmacy practices, the overall trend indicates a positive shift towards a patient-focused approach in pharmaceutical care.

Keywords: Knowledge, attitudes, pharmaceutical care, hospital, community pharmacists, Saudi Arabia.

The Impact of Technological Advances on Public Health Surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Public health surveillance is defined as the continuous and methodical gathering, examination, and interpretation of health-related data that are critical for the development, execution, and assessment of public health interventions. It is intricately linked with the prompt distribution of information that is vital for the public’s awareness and upon which action should be taken. Public health surveillance plays a pivotal role in contemporary public health practice by providing information and data, typically via the nationally notifiable disease reporting system (NNDRS), which varies in nomenclature across different nations. Priority has been placed on the early detection and precise prediction of the timing, severity, and distribution of emergent infectious diseases above all other functions of public health surveillance. This holds especially true in light of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which arose from the emergence of a novel strain of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Jia, et al.2023).

The influence of community resilience on disaster preparedness

Abstract

Since the start of the millennium, a significant portion of the population has experienced the direct impact of regular natural catastrophes, primarily affecting those residing in developing nations. As natural disasters are happening more frequently and with greater intensity around the world, it is becoming increasingly important for local decision-makers, practitioners, and community members to improve their ability to evaluate the resilience of their communities to these disasters. Gaining insight into resilience through the viewpoints of community stakeholders can facilitate the implementation of strategies aimed at mitigating the effects of catastrophes on the community as a whole, resulting in both human lives and financial resources being preserved. These stakeholders necessitate unambiguous and meticulous approaches to comprehend their risk profiles and to carry out evaluations of the magnitude of the consequences of natural calamities. Utilizing a more comprehensive and fair method of measuring resilience can assist communities in properly allocating their limited resources toward developing disaster mitigation strategies that reduce vulnerability and enhance resilience (Tariq, et al.2021).

The role of health education in promoting healthy behaviors and preventing diseases

Abstract

Health education stands as a cornerstone in the realm of public health, serving as a catalyst for empowering individuals, communities, and societies to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. At its core, health education encompasses a dynamic process of imparting knowledge, fostering skills, and shaping attitudes that promote positive health behaviors and prevent disease. By equipping individuals with the tools and resources needed to navigate complex health challenges, health education plays a pivotal role in enhancing health literacy, promoting healthy lifestyles, and ultimately improving health outcomes on both individual and population levels. Rooted in the fundamental principle that knowledge is a powerful tool for promoting health, health education encompasses a diverse range of strategies aimed at raising awareness, imparting skills, and fostering attitudes conducive to optimal health and well-being. From educating individuals about the importance of regular exercise and nutritious eating to raising awareness about the risks of tobacco use and the benefits of vaccination, health education serves as a cornerstone of public health practice (Przybylska, et al.2014).
